For those who wish to have a strong English vocabulary at the university level, and where English is not their native language, the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), Academic Word List (AWL), and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) vocabulary lists are complimentary to each other and would provide an excellent English language vocabulary foundation.
The TOEIC
exam has become an important assessment tool in hiring and promoting
staff to work in the global market place.
TOEIC is the world standard for
assessing English language skills used in the work setting. In
2013 more than seven million took the test. It is used by
14,000 companies, government agencies and English Language Learning
programs in 150 countries.
Both the Listening & Reading test
and the Speaking & Writing test assess your English vocabulary skill
level. A strong English vocabulary is essential for a good TOEIC test
result.
AWL is a list of words that appear with great frequency in a wide range of academic texts. It does not include the General Services list of the 2,000 most frequent English words. It is specific to words found in academic texts that a student would be reading at a university level.
