You may already know from either direct experience, or by reading articles, that one of the most effective methods of study is using study cards. Many studies support this. One of the latest and most comprehensive reports, published in 2013 by the Association for Psychological Science (study link), studied the ten most common learning tactics. The authors concluded that study cards can be most effective because they utilize two important learning strategies: distributed practice, or spreading your learning sessions over time; and practice testing, which engages you to actively recall as you “flip” the card to confirm your answer. Not all study cards do this well. K-ware study cards, however, are especially designed to excel in this respect.
OK, now that you see the advantage of using study cards, you may wish to consider three things.
If you are limited in time, the time you take to make cards reduces the time you can spend actually studying. That’s why many online card selections made by other students are less than 50 cards. It is a lot of work and time.
If you use paper cards, it may be cumbersome walking around with 100's of cards, or constantly exchanging a smaller stack of cards. If you are online, here are some comments from online users.
Some software programs try to impress by saying they use “algorithms” to repeat cards causing you difficulty. What is not said is how long before it cycles back to that card. That’s fine if you have unlimited time, but not if you have an exam date looming.
Consider how easy it is to add and save cards, remove cards as you learn, and insert the removed cards if you have forgotten the answers.
